Oiy! I feel a rant coming on......

How much is your knitting worth?

As you know I made a Pirate Hat for a friend at work! She loved it! See:

carol 1.jpg

What a good girl to model it for us!

Where am I going with this.... Oh yeah, another girl at work said "You could make these and sell them"

Silence..... crickets........

Okay! So yeah, I am flattered! She liked the hat! (she didn't say I could make them and sell them someone else did). Um no! I can't make these and sell these. It isn't my pattern, and if it was I would have to sell it for a lot. Which brings me to this rant.

I received my latest catalog from Free People. I love looking at this catalog. It is right up there with Anthropologie as far as beautiful clothing. But MAN!!! I came across this:

nolita hat.jpg

It is a $168.00 freakin hat! Why would anyone pay that much for this hat? It is 100% Merino, yes, that is soft, but it's not cashmere, or that other fancy stuff (you know what I am talking about, like an alpaca, vicuna! did I spell that right?)

Am I doing something wrong? Should I start making hats and charging $168.00 bucks?

Was that a rant? I have been knitting, I just haven't taken any pictures. So perhaps this is just filler.

Have a good one!

How cute am I in that hat? I love it! Many thanks my friend, you ARRRRe so talented! You ROCK!

Well, if you ever do want to sell your hats for $168 each, I would model them for you...er wait, maybe that would not be a selling point.

haha! Thanks again! I am Lovin' it! Arg!

What!!!!! Clearly, I have made a gross error in career choices. I'm pretty sure that even I, a self-proclaimed not-so-good-knitter, could make that hat. If I slap a tag on it that says, "The Sheep" could I sell it at a profit? Well...perhaps that particular tag wouldn't be quite the label that would equal $168.00. But it is enough to make you think.

I like your pirate hat better...

Posted by: Sheepish Annie at November 10, 2006 01:28 PM

with the size of those stiches, I could make that hat in about an hour! That's a hefty hourly wage.

$168 is fucking absurd. And I've had a few people tell me, "you should make that and sell it!" Uhmm nope. Can't. And I don't even make anything complicated. I guess I should be flattered, but it's frustrating. I wish I could come up with an original pattern so maybe I *could* make some money off of knitting... :)

do you want to bet that the person who actually handknit that hat (if it was indeed handknit) only got maybe $10 for it, less materials?! it's ridiculous what companies charge retail for these things and what the actual laborer gets. i say, that if you DO want to sell your knits, that you price them out. sell the same kind of hat for half as much. but then again, many of us do this hobby because it's a hobby, not a business. do you really want to turn your hobby into something else? hhmmmm, it's definitely something to think about.

Did you know that Free People and Anthropologie are owned by the same people? The guy who started Free People lives in Philly [he's the CEO of Urban Outfitters].

Posted by: mac at November 10, 2006 02:03 PM

ok so anyway 168 bucks is way too much for a hat.
i understand merino and well made but way too much.

Posted by: minijaxter at November 10, 2006 02:39 PM

No question, the pirate hat is way cuter. Besides, if you charged $168 for each hat, you'd only be selling to dumb people, and who wants that?

Posted by: Donna at November 10, 2006 02:43 PM

that is a perfect pirate hat / model combo! both are gorgeous.

don't start knitting hats for a living, you would die of boredom quite fast i think ;-)

Posted by: kris at November 10, 2006 05:14 PM

Um...I don't know free people, but I'd question if it is indeed such fine merino, and heartily agree w/ stacey. Glad you liked my somewhat oversized pirate hat. DS hasn't opened it yet, will just after pizza which should be arriving any minute. And you MUST spare the $19 and change for a year of interweave! Even though this issue has the ugliest sweater in the world in it. But lots of other good stuff. And parts of the ugliest sweater might be nice if they were dissected off the sweater. I think your pirate hat model would surely help you sell your hats, she's cute in it!

Beth, people say that to me ALL THE TIME at work! It's crazy. I do try to explain it to them sometimes, but usually I just shrug and say "Sure, if I had all the time in the world!" or something like that. Sigh.

Posted by: jenna at November 10, 2006 07:00 PM

168? Yeah. Not so much.

Posted by: Christie at November 11, 2006 12:35 AM

$168? That's ridiculous - and it probably took an hour to knit and less than $20 on material. Unreal! Who would spend that much on something like that?

Posted by: Jeanne at November 11, 2006 08:18 AM

$168 is a fair price if the person knitting it is making a living wage in an industrialized nation... like one of us.

I agree with Gleek, though. It was probably made in Cambodia by someone who was paid US $0.30 an hour.

Posted by: amandamonkey at November 11, 2006 01:25 PM

yeah i've heard that before too. i once had a guy offer to buy this one sweater that i was wearing. i told him that i doubted he would pay what i would sell it for since the yarn along had cost me over 60 bucks. i was right.

Posted by: maryse at November 11, 2006 06:36 PM

$168??!?! What?!?!? Well, that just means your pirate hat is priceless!

Posted by: diana at November 12, 2006 03:47 PM

It is amazing what people will pay. There is a quilt maker out there who charges from 4000-6000 for a hand made quilt - she sends it out to be quilted by an Amish group. The Amish themselves sell wonderful quilts for only $800-$1000. And yet, people buy quilts for $6000. I realize they are custom done for your place but still... I say more power to her. She figured it out. What the hell, if people are willing to pay why not? Personally, my problem is underselling my skills. And maybe if you sell some stuff for crazy prices you can give some things away to good causes. Balance the karma.

Posted by: sybil at November 12, 2006 04:34 PM

Thinking about that hat costing $168 and that people will buy it for that price.... It just boggles the mind. Chances are it's sweatshop made as well.

I've gotten those "You should sell that!" comments too. People mean well but they have no idea what the cost of yarn is, not to mention your time!

Posted by: vknits at November 13, 2006 03:31 PM

I think you should make them and sell them for $158 ;-R

Posted by: rebecca at November 13, 2006 11:15 PM

There is no figuring it. Really, it will make your brain hurt. Unless that hat is lined in 14K gold, I see no earthly reason why that hat would cost that much.

Posted by: meg at November 14, 2006 09:03 AM

Some good news about selling your knitting: A pattern is only copyrighted if you follow it exactly as written - including the exact yarn. If you change the yarn you use or adapt the pattern a bit, then it is your creation and you can sell it. For example - you use your handspun and have to adjust the gauge, or you alter how many little skulls and stripes you put on the hat. Handwoven and Spin Off mags have had many articles about copyright. The down side is who has time to knit (spin/weave) to sell??? I'm too busy making presents for friends and family!

WOW! That hat looks WAY awesome on a real person, and I don't even much care for skeletons *grin*

I hear ya about that other $168 hat.. that's why ebay is fun sometimes. Some people will pay unbelievable amounts for handspun yarn... there's just GOT to be a niche for us.. keep thinkin!

Posted by: Mia at November 14, 2006 01:50 PM

168 dollars! Man, I could knit that hat in a couple of hours (I think). The yarn's as thick as my leg. Un.believe.able.

Posted by: Noo at November 16, 2006 05:42 AM

well i think i shall run right down to anthropology and buy myself a hat...HAHAHAH..are they frickin crazy...!
i've told you many times you should sell your stuff, and I also offerd to pay you to make me a pirate hat....remember....? how are you.? what's new? gotta love the alpacas, they are too cute
