Dye Job
What makes for a good "dye job"?
Well I suppose you don't want your roots to show. Or perhaps you don't want it to come out to brassy. Of course a good colorist would be good to start right? Oh wait, we are talking yarn. Not hair.

Neon Food Coloring. Now, how do I get it to stop from coming onto my hands? Really, I am asking the question. More vinagar and another go in the microwave? Help. Please.
over and out

Well, when I did it (and this was a while ago) I rinsed the heck out of it so that it doesn't run anymore. It really shouldn't come off on your hands if you rinsed it enough. Then again, I've only done it once so I wouldn't say that I'm the authority on the matter!

I vote more rinsing too - couldn't hurt to add vinegar too. I have those same food colors, may I ask at what strength (how many drops each color?) you used them, yours came out much more vibrant than mine. So pretty!

Ooh! Very pretty! I keep seeing all this yarn that has been hand-dyed on all the blogs these days....it makes me want to do it myself! But realistically...I just CANT. Not time, no space, no money, etc.
I'll just wait a little longer till I can afford such luxuries...

How luridly bright - I love it! I can't offer any tips on fixing the dye, I'm afraid.

It sounds like you haven't exhausted the dye. Soak it in more vinegar (or citrate, if your nose is sensitive like mine) and zap it again until it's steaming. Let it rest for 10 minutes, zap it again. When you squeeze the yarn, the water that comes out should be colorless. Then you know you've exhausted the colors. Wait until it's just barely warm, then rinse and dry.

When I handpaint with acid dyes there is no way that I can exhaust the dye - but next time I am going to try June's vinegar tip. I usually rinse and rinse and rinse with hot water and ice cream buckets. I fill up an ice cream bucket with hot water, let the yarn sit a moment while I fill up a second bucket. Take the yarn out of first bucket and gently squeeze and repeat, repeat, repeat. Then when we are getting most of the dye out I fill up a bucket and put a drop or two of gentle dish detergent like dawn and let it soak for a while. Rinse a couple of more times to get the soap out making sure the water temperature stays the same throughout the whole process to avoid felting. Good luck :D
